My family and I attended a Golden Wedding anniversary of Gramps Hugo and Granny Isabel Tolentino yesterday. It is so amazing how two couple could last half a century of being together. And I thought of many formulas on how to keep a long and lasting love and I came up with this one. It’s not I love you BECAUSE but I love you IN SPITE OF… During the ceremony, Granny Isabel’s golden barkadas from Lourdes sang an oldie song “No Other Love” and then I saw Mama mouthed to me the words, "that’s the song I had with my… .(she meant the boyfriend she had before my papa) and I don’t know if I should be sad or what. I saw her sang the song with that sad look on her eyes. I believe during that brief moment she must have one of those misty-eyed view of the past. There’s still that soft glow and wonders painted on her almost wrinkled face. And oh God, that guy must have been the love of her life.
And I felt really down in the pits that moment knowing that 50 or so years from now, I’m gonna be the same woman who will mouth to her 24-year-old daughter the same lines, “that’s the song I had with… the guy I used to love).
And oh, dear God, he probably must be the love of my life. (sigh!)
“No Other Love” and “MoonRiver” were the songs that filled the air during Gramp Hugo and Granny Isabel’s 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary.
